Thailand focuses on halal food, tourism to become global halal hub
The Thai Muslim Trade Association (TMTA) said, the Thai halal industry– comprising food and tourism – poses a strong growth potential.
Its President, Marut Mekloy said, Thailand offers a wide range of halal-certified products across various sectors, putting the country as a prospective global halal trade hub particularly in halal tourism.
Bangkok Post reported, Marut urged for stronger cooperation between the public and private sectors in developing the halal industry, recognising the private sector’s robust presence in production, exports and education.
According to him, the halal industry is intertwined with multiple sectors and called for greater focus to establish the Thai halal industry centre with a clear direction and leadership.
The centre was included in Thailand’s draft Halal Industry Development Action Plan (2024-2027) under the purview of the Industry Ministry.
At the same time, Marut said TMTA proposed to launch a Global Muslim-Friendly Hospitality Index to the Tourism Department, aimed at certifying hospitality operators that meet specific Muslim-friendly criteria.

Founder of Malaysia International Halal Showcase (MIHAS), Mohd Shukri Abdullah said, the country has an array of One Tambon One Product items that have potential for exports, particularly food products.
“Although export production capacity remains a major challenge, authorities should identify, assess, and select hero products from each region and provide initial development grants.
“It is crucial for the country to identify killer products with strong ownership mentality and growth potential, supported by government training in accounting, marketing and financial management.
“Regarding halal certification, the Central Islamic Council of Thailand could serve as a consultant,” he said as reported by Bangkok Post.
Comasia Limited, in partnership with Shapers Malaysia (the founder of MIHAS) and the TMTA, are organising "Mega Halal Bangkok 2026" on July 15-17 at Queen Sirikit National Convention Center in Bangkok.
The event aims to connect Thai exporters with major supermarket chains, international e-commerce platforms and regional distributors, featuring food and beverage, halal fashion, cosmetics, wellness and spa, pharmaceuticals, and Islamic finance.
Organisers anticipate around 200 exhibitors and 100,000 visitors.
